Last week the Bicycle Coalition of Maine - the people who have our backs and advocate for our rights to share the roads with vehicles - hired me to hold mountain bike clinics and skill rides for our community. This is a FREE offering for the participants! I held the first of hopefully many tonight with 2 beginnermediate-level riders. I saw a huge increase in their comfort level while on the bike over the course of the clinic - Mission accomplished! Now we just need to get the word out so the community can take advantage of this! Read on about how the cli
Body position (being centered and balanced on the bike) and descending with confidence were the 2 main focuses during tonight's clinic on the Gorham trails.
After learning correct body position, we pedaled out to the first couple of descents near the high school and sessioned the hills.
The participant's finished the clinic with some new tools to whip out their back pockets while shredding the trails (and their instructor had fun, too 😉).

While many of you are just wrapping up your 2016 cross season, we've been busy getting things dialed in for the 2017 edition of Casco Bay Cross. It's less than a year away, and we're excited about making improvements and building on this past year's successes.
So mark your calendars for Sunday, October 22, 2017. We're coordinating with NEBRA and received approval to apply for use of the Eastern Promenade again. We did try for Deering Oaks Park and didn't get permission to apply for that space due to the potential negative impact on the park's fragile tree root system. Our hope is that someday we can work around the sensitive grounds and find a way to hold a cyclocross race there in the future. Until then, Eastern Prom here we come!
Stay tuned for more details as the year progresses, and watch our Facebook page for updates and news. Best of luck to all as the season winds down. We'll be racing at Nationals next month.
The calendar is filling up fast with events and coaching! The 2017 year brings a positive change for SR&T, with more time and energy spent on mountain bike instruction. In July, I'll attend the Professional Mountain Bike Instructor Level 1 certification in Vermont. After that, I plan on spending more time giving lessons to beginner and intermediate riders.
On the event side, we'll once again hold the Casco Bay Cyclocross race in October, and take on a new role with a memorial ride happening in Gorham. Stay tuned for details on the memorial ride that is slated for 2018. Because of my motherly responsibilities, I'll once again shelve the fat bike race in New Gloucester and bikecations in Carrabassett Valley until I have more time to work. And since the Farm to Fork Fondos require 2 full days of travel with each event, we'll pass on those as well. It's just too much traveling with a 1 year old.
I'm really looking forward to focusing more time on mountain bike instruction. The certification sounds really thorough, and I've heard great things about PMBI! Check out the events page under the coaching section of my site for mtb clinic dates and offerings!
Take a look at a few pics from my last clinic as a Liv Cycling Ambassador! I was teaching how to corner through a taped cyclocross course. We also covered steering through variable terrain, how to carry the bike over obstacles, and how and when to surge (increase speed) during a race.
